The Delhi Zoo, also known as the National Zoological Park, is a 176-acre (71-hectare) zoo in New Delhi, India. A 16th-century citadel, a sprawling green island, and an eclectic collection of animals and birds, all in the heart of burgeoning urban Delhi. The zoo can be explored on foot or by renting a battery-powered vehicle from the zoo. Visitors are not permitted to bring food or drink into the zoo, but there is a canteen. Every Friday and national holiday, the zoo is closed.

History of Delhi Zoo
Mr. Punjab Rao Deshmukh, Hon’ble Minister of the Government of India, formally inaugurated the Park on November 1, 1959, and it was initially known as Delhi Zoo. It was designated as a National Zoological Park in 1982, with the intention of serving as the country’s model zoo. The Indian Board for Wildlife saw the need for a zoo in the country’s capital to provide recreation to the general public. As a result, an ad hoc committee of prominent Delhi nature lovers, including Indira Gandhi, was formed under the Chairmanship of the Chief Commissioner to develop a proposal for the establishment of a Zoological Park in Delhi.
